Man|ner|ism «MAN uh rihz uhm», noun.
a style of painting and architecture of the 1500's, chiefly Italian, which attempted to break away from the classical forms of the Renaissance by distorting scale, perspective, lighting effect, and the like, within a formal framework. Mannerism is characterized by graceful lines, elongated and abstract forms, and metallic colors with white highlights. Its rediscovery in the early part of the 1900's was due to its affinity with some movements in modern art.
